Search Engine Optimization
10 tips on optimizing your web site for Google and Yahoo search results.

Search engines can be a goldmine for bringing traffic to your site. Google and other search engines probably show thousands of results for the search terms for which you want your site to appear.  Search engine optimization (SEO) is truly an art form which some people spend their careers researching.  However, below are ten good tips to get you started:

  1. Contact other relevant sites to see if they will link to you.

  1. Submit your site to Google (http://www.google.com/addurl.html) and Yahoo (submit.search.yahoo.com/)

  1. Submit a Sitemap to Google Webmaster tools. It uses your sitemap to learn about the structure of your site and to increase the coverage of your webpages.

  1. Submit your site to relevant directories such as the Open Directory Project and Yahoo!, as well as to other industry-specific expert sites.

  1. Make a site with a clear hierarchy and text links. Every page should be reachable from at least one static text link.

  1. Create a useful, information-rich site, and write pages that clearly and accurately describe your content.

  1. Try to use text instead of images to display important names, content, or links. Search engine crawlers often do not recognize text contained in images.

  1. Host your site with a reliable company. Search engines will punish your web site if it often goes down.

  1. Use fewer than 100 links on any given page.

  1. Make use of the robots.txt file on your web server. This file tells crawlers which directories can or cannot be crawled. Make sure it’s current for your site so that you don’t accidentally block the Googlebot crawler.
